So says Jim Wallace, who was the guest on the Daily Show yesterday (and the rerun this evening). It’s an interesting idea, and I’ve held it as possible from time to time. It seems to drive astrologer Rob Brezney and his Free Will Astrology as well as his book, Pronoia: How the Universe Is Conspiring to Shower You With Blessings. He picks and chooses from spiritual menus precisely as I have read the local bishop of the Roman church write that we ought not do.
But why not? One of the basic problems for any group claiming exclusive ownership of religious truths is the smallness of their claim. Kathy has a book which she inherited from her mother or grandmother whose title I agree with almost without reservation: Your God Is Too Small. So’s the bishop’s. We’re finite creatures. We cannot comprehend infinity, let alone a spirit inhabiting and containing infinity. Or at least can’t for more than that flashing moment called epiphany.
I’m a picker and a chooser. The most profound insight I’ve run across is derived from the Hindu by way of the Bhuddist: The world is illusion–and the illusion is that the world is other, that there is separation. Separation is the illusion. I’ve read the books about Jesus and I’m pretty sure he would say, yep, that is so. I haven’t read much of Mohamed, but I have a feeling he would agree. We are already all one. And that’s a thought I can live with and feel better for having thought it. But what keeps me rolling most of the time aren’t specifically spiritual or religious thoughts, it’s keeping up with the present moment and the promises I’ve made about it.
