New Look

February 12th, 2008 · 2 Comments

We hope you aren’t too shocked at the new look today. It’s cleaner, we think, and we’re developing a pleasant look. The first job of art and design, to let you know where we stand on a very old question, is to decorate pleasingly. For those who believe that the first duty of art is to educate, to elucidate, are can, quite naturally, be a bitter pill and will improve the viewer/ auditor/ reader. We argue that the piece of art cannot improve its consumer unless it has the power to draw the attention first. Well, there you go. That is the state of aesthetical argument in these parts these days.

There will be some changes as we go, header art, for instance. The Jesus bird walking on the water on the front page, is from a Saturday trip to the boardwalk west of the SPI Convention Center. The painting heading individual articles is from one of two paintings done by one of Mrs. Raines’ grandmothers which we found on the wall of the guest bedroom at her aunt’s house in Lubbock. We are looking for more images.

Well, I like the new look right well. Not only the header art, which adds a certain elegance, and is all the more interesting because it was done by a forbearer. There are now navigation links!!! yeah!! You must have upgraded to the new version of wordpress. Well done. It really looks very fine.

I’m glad you’re pleased with the changes. I’m having to re-learn coding and, particularly, the peculiarities of php. I’m not sure what front page header you saw. I’ve had four up today. I think I’m settling on this last one, which is a manipulated image of an egret I photographed Saturday on the lagoon at sunset. And the titling stands out better against the simplified graphic. But thanks for the kudos.
