Another War Poem

March 31st, 2008 · No Comments

This one is mine. I wrote it on the occasion of the first beheading in Iraq. If you are squeamish, read something else as this is fairly graphic for poetry.

Sacrifice

If you have eyes then look
At this slashing of flesh;
Wonder at the rush of life
Gushing around your boots.

If you have ears you will hear
Screams gone to sputters,
Lungs gasping though half a throat.
You will catch your breath.

If you have bones then feel
This cracking of terror
Down your neck and spine,
Planting your feet in the ground.

If you have heart, then groan,
And run to your brother,
Kneel with your sister.
Forgive and ask forgiveness.
