Unsolicited Testimonial from Big Daddy

bigdaddysmall.JPGIf you do not read Rob Brezsny’s Free Will Astrology, do yourself a favor and pop over there. His messages are astonishing. And, since I believe nothing and therefore am credulous of everything (and I admit it is a fault), I am quite susceptible to astonishment and may sit in one place, mouth agape and eyes popped nearly out of my head for quite extended periods, astonished at some pronouncement of his.

Today, for instance, he quotes Alistair Crowley, of all people; the Great Beast, if you don’t know, or so he called himself at least once; extraordinary spiritualist, he would say; haunter and sometimes master of the Circle of the Golden Dawn, or so he said–the Golden Dawn haunted also by the likes of Samuel Butler Yeats; Alistair Crowley, who died of cocaine overdose in his early thirties, some say. That Alistair Crowley. Here’s what Crawley said:

“I slept with faith and found a corpse in my arms on awakening, …
I drank and danced all night with doubt and found her a virgin in the morning.”

You’ve got to recognize an extraordinary metaphor maker, anyway. And it is a shocking image, just the kind Mr. Brezsny prefers so long as it offers insight. So, does this mean I am to honor faithlessness and doubt? There’s a tall order. Mr. Brezsny continues:

I think that formulation will serve you well in the coming days, Libra. There’s little to be gained from clinging compulsively to your hopes and fantasies about what’s true. Just the opposite: Momentous strength will rise up in you if you question everything you hold dear or assume to be fact.

Now if you don’t understand why that is both delightful and inspiring, kindly pass me by on the street and save us both some time. I certainly find it as inspiring as many of the talks I’ve heard on a Sunday morning. Well, somewhere or other –my mind’s pretty scattered on things I read thirty years ago–Plato said something along those lines. Now I’ll have to look it up, which keeps me further employed and it will most certainly contribute to my chains of endless speculation. What more could you want from an astrologer?
Take a look at Mr. Brezsny’s work. You’ll at least get a chuckle. Or a link for one of your chains.
