The Hillary is Dead! Long Live the Hillary!

A comment from Stan

It appears that Hillary Clinton’s presidential ambitions have come to their end, her protestations to the contrary notwithstanding. She still has a loyal base that will quite probably make a show of it for her in West Virginia, the Washington Post says this morning, but Obama is likely to win a larger number of delegates in Oregon, plus he has had a pickup of super delegates and is in front of Clinton in that category, too. A Clinton-supporting super delegate was on the radio a little while ago saying the trickle to Obama is going to become a gush. Turn out the lights, my dear. The party’s over.

Ms. Clinton’s only hopes appear to be in a willingness to disrupt the convention with a floor fight over seating delegates in the discounted Michigan and Florida primaries, and a blatant appeal to super delegates that she will be the one to get the white racist vote. Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has posted a PowerPoint document that the Clintons have been circulating among the super delegates. The PowerPoint uses the code “The Tough Districts,” but the point is as obvious as Richard Nixon’s use of Law and Order in the same districts. They are the districts where racialist sentiments have been successfully appealed to in the past.

Mrs. Clinton would be well advised to condede at this point. Frank Rich points out in this morning’s column that a major problem for her and the pundits on both sides is that they keep misunderstanding what’s going on because their minds are stuck in the past. The Right Wing of the Nutcase Watch think “the Karl Rove playbook of Swift-boating and race-baiting can work as it did four and eight years ago.” The mass of new voters coming online this year are demonstrably not hung up on race or a host of other issues that the old guard conventional thinkers keep pounding on. And they are voting, these twenty somethings.

What Mrs. Clinton should be doing this fall is winning those so-called “tough districts” for Mr. Obama. She should spend her time explaining to those white folks who are her base why they should overcome their prejudices, that, black and white, the working people of this land have been exploited, as producers, as consumers, as targets of campaigns to oversell everything, including the fear that drives them away from their Black fellow citizens.

If she takes up this call, “Long Live Hillary!” indeed.

5 11 08 a.m. Stan, …not your usual fare! But I like it - and it would be “nice if the Clinton Team/Marriage/Pair stepped aside and began to help the Democratic Party - a party that even after decades of waffling - still has some hope! But huge egos/power/psychological demons/moneyed-corporate friends/global bankers are at play here. Ms. Clinton, go back to the Senate, fight for health care and also work those hard districts (point from Stan) …. that have “those bitter people” Obama correctly noted …. Again, fine piece, Stan!

Oh, local music might pick up, as people can’t drive afar - so they’ll note Brownsville, like the fresh scene on Central Boulevard ….

5 12 08 sultry and humid and cloudy start of the day Stan - Yes, Joe’s has a new owner, and the live music scene is coming back.

Emilio Crixell said the Bluzanos are set for the 28th, a special return ….

…thought more about the tight money scene, and then thought more about: local music; libraries; walks; bikes; meals at home; talking; visiting; mental health …and all could increase, and, or, improve as we in Deep South Texas begin to realize that we are sharing the planet with about seven billion other people, all wanting some of its goodies ….

And before I am called elitist, I know there are working people, farmers, truckers …who need more gas than casual drivers …and they should pay less, and we regular folk more! In that vein, I know a man who delivers pet beds from the Valley to the North - and yes, he needs a break on gas so pet lovers can get those beds so they can interact with their pets, after the pets have rested ….
