A clerihew from Lozelle Jennings
The Barca Brothers’ pachydermal lightning
certain Scipiotic Romans found too frightning:
while Hannibal hoped brother’d get his back,
Hasdrubal’s head rolled up in a sack.
Editor’s note: Barca was the ancient Greek city from which Hannibal and brother Hasdrubal’s family name derived. They led the Carthaginian attacks on Rome in the Second Punic Wars, 218 to 208, B.C.
Author’s note: The backstory sans Wiki—1) Barca is Cathaginian for lightning; 2) the Scipio family generaled and railed against them in the Senate for at least 2 generations, eventually causing Cathage to be burned and salted; 3) Hannibal was stalled in Italy badly in need of reinforcements; 4) Hasdrubal was bringing help elephantine and otherwise but was led astray and killed at the Battle of Metaurus; 5) the Romans cut off his head, put it in a sack and threw it over Hannibal’s encampment wall. Ha!
