Big houses; homes going

June 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Gene’s Notebook

…in the past two days, three big houses with big lawns and trees and histories came up for sale in West Brownsville, as their owners age, and can not manage in big houses ….

…owners for 40 years and more, and how do they feel when they look up and southwest at a new moon, and know that by the next one they won’t be seeing it from a very familiar window ….

…cowardly me, I could barely look the owners in the eye, and could barely shake their hand, my sadness projected, sad about their going, sad about how that going is another milestone in my aging ….

…most of my relatives died in their homes, homes they were born in, or born within a mile of …. They never considered selling or moving ….

So the moon drops, the elderly take their pills, limp to beds and think, that soon, they will leave those trees for, fortunately, family (younger) who will help …so maybe I’ll moderate that sad ….

What I really love about these notebook entries is their immediacy, how they capture one particular moment and then, a little twist, and we’re hooked up with very close to the eternal.
