To Austin

From Gene’s Notebook

…went to Austin with wife/friend/companion/pal/partner/guardian of my solititude and guardian of my togetherness because she asked me to; she was an Obama delegate at the State Democratic Convention, and I now share two images ….

…the more than 12,000 people in the Austin Convention Center, EVERY face in Texas, EVERY language in Texas, and I cried, cried for the potential of the United States, the ONLY country where such a rainbow could be seen …. I cried for the United States, the hope of the World, my country, and I stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, held my cap over my heart and cried …. My country, the faces …. Every shade of skin, together for a weekend, maybe longer ….

…and not taking an elevator in a hotel, using the steps …and down to floor one or up from floor one, well off the posh lobby, the laundry with men and women, all new to the United States, surrounded, almost buried by soiled sheets, getting them ready for the automatic washers …. I did not cry when I saw those men and women, but I thought, as they industriously, carefully and cautiously join the rainbow ….

…My country, your country, our country….not perfect but sure beats the ‘hell’ out of living anywhere else. You hit the proverbial ‘nail on the head’ with your description of another ’slice of life’….nowhere else in the world does something like this happen…always great to read some of your ’stuff’ Gene.
