A poem by Michael Stewart
- R -

When Alexander, Ares pride, detumefied,
Old Ares made his move across the sea.
There in his Roman home his modest rho
Changed into the sort of prurient P
You see in EAPLY LAPIDAPY LATIN.
Later, on its own two legs, R never let Mars rest.
It raped its way across the Rubicon with him
To Ireland, as you’ve heard, and some points west,
Thus landing in the middle of America,
Where it survives, unchanged since Cæsar’s day.
Ah, long may ready armies keep men literate
And martial arts and letters hold the sway.
Editor’s note: If any of our German readers have information on the fate of Michael Stewart, former professor of linguistics at Ball State University, who moved to Germany with his wife Barbara in the middle 1970’s, please drop us a note as we would actually care to get formal permission from our former friend to continue publishing his material here.
