Arts in the Rio Grande Valley: July 25-31, 2008

July 25th, 2008 · No Comments

From Virginia Gause

Hurricane Dolly has come and gone, but we are still picking up her debris and accessing damages.  Glass artist Duane Beard notified me that the Beachcomers Fine Art Show has been cancelled for this weekend because of damage to the South Padre Island Convention Center.  This is the first time in 49 years that the show has been severely affected by weather!  If it is rescheduled, I will let you know.

Sandra Cisneros’ novel “The House on Mango Street” is celebrating its 25th year of publication.  I have been working on a project to bring the author to the Edinburg/McAllen area.  She is scheduled to be part of FESTIBA at UTPA which is scheduled for March 23-28, 2009!

Daniel Garcia Ordaz, the Mariachi poet, was on KVEO 23 TV the other day and had some very interesting things to say.  Here’s the broadcast in case you missed it:

If you are doing some serious event planning and need to know holidays of various public schools in the Valley, consult this wonderful calendar put together by Region One in Edinburg:

As cancellation notices have come in this week for various art events, I have posted them to the www.ArtsRGV.com event calendar.  But you might want to call the venues to confirm any event that you are attending this weekend.  UTPA, UTB and STC (all 5 campuses) have dismissed classes until Monday, June 28th.

And that I need more events from the Lower Valley.
