John McCain announced at an afternoon press conference today that he was suspending his campaign and urging Barack Obama to postpone or cancel Friday’s planned debate.
Is anyone impressed by this as anything other than a grandstand move to claim “ownership” of the issue? And why not debate? Here’s the issue to which people are actually paying attention at the moment. The candidates can articulate thier points of view while they are under extraordinary pressure and give the electorate an incredibly clear picture of their differences. Personally, I’m guessing McCain is running scared at the prospect and wants to put it off or, better yet, cancel it so that the first encounter is in McCain’s preferred town hall format. Call me cynical.
