PalmFest going now! Don’t miss it!

October 4th, 2008 · No Comments

A note from Virginia Gause with schedule

Please excuse me if I explain it in the terms of a few “F” words. That “F” in the middle of  PalmFest clearly stands for “Folklife”.  Folklife at PalmFest is evidenced by what our folks do best.  If your name is “Perdomo”, you spin threads from sheep and later you weave those threads into something utilitarian as our Scottish and Irish ancesters did in the nineteenth century.  If you name is “Lady Mariposa” you tell your story in poetry and you give a command performance at PalmFest’s Lonesome Dove Stage in Heritage Village.  Let’s see what the poet has to say about “palms.”  If you are part of the South Texas Indian Dancers, you tell your story in feathers!

If you name is “Duran”, you open the PalmFest at the Entravision Communications stage both Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm with a show stopping demonstration of international dance, particularily Flamenco dancing — an “f” word the Spanish love.

If you like martial arts and want to see how it relates to Korea, Japan and China, don’t miss Team Tiger Martial Arts on Saturday at 1 pm or Bob Davis Martial Arts on Sunday at 1 pm.

Some new acts to be introduced to the general public at PalmFest at McAllen Convention Center this weekend, includes a Filipino Fashion show (two “f” words for the price of one) at the HEB Dance Stage.  Many people thoughout the Valley have taken tango lessons from Dr. Hak-Nam Kim.  After Dr. Kim and his star students demonstrating this extraordinary dance put their little feet forward, even more people will be eager to sign up!

Always a favorite at PalmFest is the Tejano group “La Preferencia”. This year the group introduces a UTPA freshman as the lead female singer. Catch them at the Entravision Communications stage both days. But you will only have one chance to hear another perennial favorite, “Mariachi Los Gavilancillos” on that stage Saturday. For the blues fans, “Mojo Soul” is your goal on Saturday.

Another young singing sensation is Bree Stevens from Brownsville.  I know you are going to like her.  And Chris Marshall and Ryan Marshall will be on stage on Sunday.  “Highway 7”, with a couple of performers from Canada who now live in the Valley is an exciting band you are going enjoy.

African drums belonging to Marcel Adjibi will roll as a new act called “Hum Pax” takes center stage on Saturday.  How many collaborations of musicians from Africa and Mexico do you know?  At the end of this show you will come away with an understanding of what “Hum Pax” means.

The only Gospel group signed on this year was “sNc Conjunto” from Harlingen.

If your name is “Julian” you have spent a lifetime promoting the fame of “Fajitas”.  This includes getting everyone for miles around to bring in their barbeque furniture and elaborate grills and have fun (another “f” word) cooking in the great outdoors at PalmFest.

But what about Saturday?  Isn’t one of the greatest stars in the history of Tejano music performing at PalmFest’s Entravision Communications stage.  Indeed he is!  We are talking about Roberto Pulido y Los Classicos who will close PalmFest on Sunday night from 8 – 10 pm.  I think it is neat that he graduated from UTPA the first year I worked there.  He might tell you what year that was if you ask him!   Opening act will be the TexMex Kadillaks.

Closing PalmFest on Sunday night from 7 – 8 pm will be two wonderful arts – Phillip Kellogg on the Budweiser Stage and Mariachi Herencia Mexicano on the Entravision Communication Stage.

For the youngsters there will be kiddie rides and activities provided by McAllen South Rotary.  And there will be sand castle building.

Have you ever seen a Japanese Koto being plucked.  They have giant strings!  You can see four of them on stage at once on Sunday afternoon at the Budweiser Stage.  Of course, the musicans will all wear Japenese kimonos which is a fashion parade in its own right.  And don’t miss the origami sessions inside the convention center by nimble fingers from Japan.

There will be two sets of dancers from India on Saturday, as well as hip hop dancers and belly dancers both days at the HEB Dance Stage.  Hip Hop will be covered by “South Texas Venom” and “RGV Calypso Dance Team”.  Schools of dance such Deborah Case Dance Academy, Dancentre of Edinburg, Dance Conservatory of McAllen , and Pointe y Plie School of Dance will present shows they developed for especially for PalmFest. The ever inspiring “Silver Boots Linedancers” and the “Senior Linedancers from Donna” will dance to some lively tunes.

If Folk Crafts are your thing, you will enjoy the variety of shopping offered by El Mercado the outdoor market around the eastern circle of the Convention Center’s circular drive.  Judging from the number of tables Angie Juarez was setting up on Friday afternoon, this market is going to be huge!

Fine Art (what did I say about “f”words) will be displayed in the exhibit hall by McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s “Art Festival”.  There will also be and indoor performance stage in the north west corner of the exhibit hall.  And to get to those you have to pass the display of Palm Frond Art by Carl Seale.

And will there be films at PalmFest?  Well, we thought there would be, but the Film Festival segment outgrew its space and McAllen Chamber moved it to Cine El Rey in downtown McAllen.  I will give you permission to check it out, only if you come to PalmFest and enjoy yourself on Sunday!  You can’t miss the McAllen’s biggest folk festival!

Inside the convention center will be Care Bears. Get your photo made with them.

Fear no evil – Wonder Woman and Batman are here for 3 lives performances each day.  “Al Ragusin and his Dancing Horses” will perform two shows per day at the Budweiser Stage.  And Al has added a clinic each day on “Training Your Own Horse.”  He is bringing some Tahitian dancers too!

We’ve got jazz with Frontera Jazz Quartet, the “Jazzmanian Devil” Tomas Rivera from Bayview, and the Kim Snyder Trio may even throw in some jazz numbers.

Appearing on the Lonesome Dove Storytellers Stage are your neighbors and mine – Dr. Cayetano Barrera, Melissa Guerra, Kirk Clark, Pat Moyer, Dick Moore, Maynard Kriedler, Lipan Apache Robert Soto, Magician Oscar Munoz, flamenco guitarist Mario Aleman, Sister Marion Stromeyer, Roger Wahl from the Bear Klan, charro roper Marcelino Torres, fur trader Ken Klabon, Robert Rankin representing the Scottish Society and a group of Rap Dancers.

“Time Machine” will be on stage at Budweiser Sunday with a play list of rock classic that I know you are going to love.  And you’ll be are glad to know that “Lock N Load” is back at the Budweiser Stage.

In the Heritage Village area really don’t miss the car show with some gorgeous classic cars.  Learn some history from the Civil War re-enactors.  Don’t jump when the canon fires periodically throughout the day. Visit the native American teepees.  Taste some pan de campo and enjoy fajitas and other food adventures.

If you did not purchase tickets for the Chuckwagon under the stars, set for 7 - 9 pm on Saturday night, ask at Information Central to be directed to someone in Heritage Village who may have a few left. They are $20.00 and include ribeyes with all the trimmings.  You will get to meet some of the folks who are the kingpins of PalmFest.

Just so you won’t miss anything here is the entire schedule for the four outdoor stages.  Break out those digital cameras and video cameras!  PalmFest 2008 is going to be fantastic photo opportunity!
