From Gene’s Notebook
When I went to baseball games, the only balls fans got were those that went into the stands.
Now, the rich who get box seats that surround the field - often purchased by corporations - get numerous balls from the players and ball boys and ball girls who pick up fouls and gently toss them to those with their hands out.
Handouts and hands out, sound familiar?
And when getting a baseball was a challenge, that was a time, capitalism without assistance; now, it’s too damn easy to get a baseball - socialism for the rich; again, familiar?

10 9 08 sunny p.m., a little autumn …like that “billb” reads my stuff; he’s been subjected to it for years, neighbor-man across the street, first verbal, now in print …. We’re closer on local issues than foreign ones, and as for the former, he’s said he might write a piece about the foolish, and really unexplained funding plan, for the baseball park in a non-baseball town and for a league that is close to death … I’ll be looking for the letter, “billb,” with a possible link to the West Loop scheme, and unused public school fields, and the what-will-be-largely-unused Sports Park …..
