South Texas College is 15 years old this year and so the college is throwing a big, day-long Quiceanera to celebrate. The community is invited to partake in a full day of free, fun festivities and activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at STC’s Pecan Campus located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. and 29th Street in McAllen.
The event is geared at fun for the entire family. Children and their families can enjoy face painting, a magic and a comedy act, a puppet show and storytelling, Additionally, families can learn about butterflies and nature from naturist Mike Overton, learn about software development and technology, view the earth and sea in the college’s planetarium, participate in science games, see robots and cool physics and chemistry demonstrations, just to name a few fun educational opportunities. Campus tours will be available throughout the day, as well as an opportunity to meet STC’s Jerry the Jaguar.
Showing its commitment to the arts, the college is showcasing art shows at galleries across campus, performances of short plays and Day of the Dead displays. The community is also invited to enjoy special live performances by Nikki Rowe High School’s RAZZ-MA-TAZZ, La Joya High School’s Mariachi Los Coyotes, the Deborah Case Studio Dancers, Rey Duran y su Ballet Internacional, Pedro Garcia’s performance of “The Life and Times of Juanito Gonzalez,” and strolling musicians.
For history and literature buffs, the college’s Pecan Campus Library offers a full day of book talks and book signings with distinguished authors from STC’s faculty, as well as poetry readings.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. automotive enthusiasts will enjoy the Rally for Education car, truck, motorcycle and military vehicle show.
From 5 to 7 p.m. STC Alumni and Friends will host a reception in the college’s new, state-of-the art Cooper Center for Communication Arts. All former students are invited to attend.
For early risers, STC’s Kinesiology Department is hosting its annual Turkey Trot. Those interested in participating are asked to bring four canned goods, which will be donated to the Food Bank of the RGV. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and a two mile walk/run begins at 9:15 a.m.
