Wildflower Wilt In Drought, Heat

Hot and dry, wilting all,
Animal and vegetable …
And then the prisoners,
Locked in, free from
Elements, no shrunken
Yellow and purple stem heads
For them, and when out, say on
A Greyhound to Chicago,
They endure corn through windows,
Waiting for smoke breaks in prairie cities,
Waiting for Chicago, no flowers,
No flowers in the penitentiary,
None on South 94th Street …
