The shop owners and the salesgirls
Stand under the overhang, out of the rain.
The owners hand tens and twenties,
And the girls take them, putting their plastic
Bags on the sidewalk: week’s wages to hand;
Discounts-given clothes ….
The girls, in twos, threes and fours,
Walk down the sidewalk, some umbrellas up.
The rain sprinkles, twilight falls, streetlights yellow.
