Greetings Farmers Market Fan!

The Brownsville Farmers Market opening bell is at 8 a.m. Saturday Morning – October 3rd, 2009. This, the second year of the Market, will be bigger and better. The Market Manager, Kathy Martin will return with some tweaks to the layout and a couple of new features. Watch for some of our local culinary talent demonstrating their skills with Market products, and for some payment alternatives such as the Lone Star card.

Vendors are being encouraged to express themselves with signage and tents, so there will be some color on the walkway.

Since this Saturday is opening day, it is hard for me to “report”, so I will just pass on what we expect:

8 a.m. The Market bell rings and sales begin. Hopefully all the logistics will work and you’ll see your favorite vendor at their table of wares.

9 a.m. Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. and other local public officials will welcome the community to the second season of the Brownsville Farmers Market

Noon We shut her down!

Here’s a run down on who we think will be vendors on opening day, and what they will bring:

  • The Graybill Family- local honey, eggs
  • Bayview Veggies – sprouts, watermelon, specialty melons, okra, peppers, eggplant, sweet potatos
  • Debbie Cox – herbs, plants
  • Yahweh Farms – eggplant, peppers, eggs
  • Rivers End Nursery – star fruit, dragon fruit, guavas, eggs
  • Ruth Wagner – vegetables
  • Les Hogdson – fresh caught gulf shrimp
  • Marco Bartolomeo – Kettle Korn
  • Alice Abbott – breads, crackers
  • Mathers Farms – carrots
  • Gracia Family – vegetables
  • Alaniz Produce – vegetables
  • Leticia Cantu – Fruit Cups
  • Ron Dickerson - surprise us!
  • James Sojak – vegetables
  • Palm Gardens - vegetables

It was a real challenging year to grow a crop – drought, record heat, etc. But finally, September brought rain. We’ve dodged the hurricanes so far, so it is shaping up like a fine year for the Market. Please come, shop, enjoy the experience, and take something good to eat home with you. I look forward to seeing you again – seems like it was longer than just 3 months!
